In conjunction with the publication of my book “a moment in time -ume-,” I held a solo exhibition “a moment in time -trees-” at Karimoku Commons Tokyo. In addition to the new works and the plant-dyed candy sculptures featured in the book, collaborative works with Karimoku Furniture were also exhibited. I made the works with my own hands(except for wooden parts) and directed the exhibition space.
“a moment in time -trees-
Creating harmony with nature
In 2021, I created a work of ame (a hard candy) colored with plant-based dyeing from an encounter with a plum tree destined to be cut down in a few months.
Just as plants change colors over time, candy also changes, undergoing a process of melting and crystallizing.
The "uncontrollable change" of this candy work is common in our lives. It is not stagnant and unchanging and allows us to feel "a moment in time."
To record “that moment in time” of my plum tree ame project, I created my book "a moment in time -ume-." I also had the opportunity to hold a solo exhibition to commemorate the book’s publication, "a moment in time -trees-" at Karimoku Commons Tokyo.
In the summer of 2022, I visited the Karimoku furniture factory and heard about the forest from which the wood is sourced. I learned that each tree has a different expression and that Karimoku makes their furniture by respecting the nature and individuality of the trees. Their tireless efforts help revitalize the woods and make the best use of the material.
In this exhibition, we displayed works in collaboration with Karimoku, the ume candy sculptures featured in my book, and my new projects. The time will come when the tree material and candy return to earth. Through this project, I could feel the connection between these natural materials and “monozukuri” (making of things). I hope that this exhibition will remain in people's hearts and memories.
